Mobile's Mardi Gras parade Tuesday was tainted by tragedy when a five-year-old girl was hit and killed by a Buick. The motor vehicle-pedestrian accident happened just after the parade at the corner of Congress and Kennedy.

The Associated Press report says the 23-year-old man driving the car did not stop initially, and crashed into another car while trying to flee the scene of the accident. Relatives of the girl held the man until police arrived.

Over its two-week carnival, Mardi Gras drew nearly 878,000 people according to a report from the Montgomery Advertiser. During this period, police arrested 22 people on felony charges and 237 on misdemeanors.
