Judge approves $64 million Paxil settlement

The world's second largest drug manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, will pay nearly $64 million to settle claims from parents of minor patients who were taking antidepressant drug Paxil.

The plaintiffs claim that the company provided misleading information about giving Paxil to minors, not adequately warning about possible suicidal side effects and withdrawal symptoms.

``The settlement was agreed upon to resolve the pending litigation and avoid further expenses,'' Glaxo spokeswoman Mary Anne Rhyne said. ``There was no liability admission.''

Glaxo is the target of more than 4,000 lawsuits, combined in a federal court in Los Angeles, that allege Paxil users suffered withdrawal symptoms. The company also faces suits in Pennsylvania and Texas state courts.
