Mobile Man Killed in Motorcycle Collision

A motorcycle accident claimed the life of a Mobile man, 46, on Sunday, when he collided with a sedan, according to Mobile police. Another motorcyclist was hit as well, police said, but he was not injured.

The man died at University of South Alabama Medical Center after his motorcycle crashed with a Buick LaSabre, driven by a man in his 80s.

A police spokesman said the motorcyclists were traveling down Hillcrest Road on their motorcycles when the driver of the sedan pulled out from Angela Court. The accident happened at 4:30 p.m.

The man was transported by helicopter to Alabama Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The accident is still under investigation. At this time officials do not believe alcohol was involved although hey are still waiting on toxicology test results. Investigators are also working to determine if speed was the cause of the crash.

American Honda Motor Co. Recall ATVs Due to Loss of Speed Control

American Honda Motor Co., in conjunction with the CPSC, is recalling about 40,000 Model Year 2007 Honda TRX 500 ATVs due to loss of speed control.

It is possible for water to get into the throttle position sensor and freeze it, which causes permanent damage if the rider tries to force the throttle lever. Doing this could cause the throttle to stick open and the rider would lose control of the speed of the ATV. This poses a serious risk of injury or death for the riders.

This recall involves Model Year 2007 Honda TRX 500 ATVs, also known as the Honda Foreman and Foreman Rubicon. The adult-size ATVs are designed for use by riders age 16 and older. The 2007 model year ATVs are available in red, black, blue, olive, and camouflage. The Honda name and wing logo are printed on the fuel tank and the model name is printed on the side panel just below the seat.

So far there have not been any injuries reported to the company, but Hinda has recieved two reports of the throttle sticking. These ATVs were sold at Honda dealerships across the country in December 2007.

Alabama Man Killed in Motorcycle Accident(2)

A motorcycle accident claimed the life of a Saraland man, on Friday, according to Alabama State Police.

The motorcyclist, 18, was transported to the University of South Alabama Medical Center by helicopter ambulance, where he later died from the severe injuries he suffered in the crash.

The accident occurred when the motorcycle crashed with another vehicle on Industrial Parkway near the Interstate 65 service road at 4:30 p.m., on Friday afternoon. The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the crash.

Police are currently investigating the cause of the accident. At this time police believe alcohol was not a factor.

Alabama Man Killed in Motorcycle Accident

A 27-year-old man lost his life in a motorcycle accident, Saturday, when he collided with a pickup truck in Saraland, according to authorities.

The accident occurred just after 9 p.m. on the corner of Industrial Parkway and Shelton Beach Road.

Authorities have not released the name of the motorcyclist, pending family notification; he was believed to be from Eight Mile, according to officials. He was transported to University of South Alabama Medical Center by helicopter.

The driver of the pickup truck appeared to be uninjured, police said, although the airbag on the truck deployed, triggering the initial call to police by an automated system.

No arrests have been made at this time while the accident remains under investigation.

Motorcyclist in Critical Condition After Colliding with SUV

A motorcycle accident involving an SUV, on Friday, shut down the southbound lanes of Shug Jordan Parkway for over a half hour.

The accident occured when a motorcyclist, 25, of Opelika, was traveling south on Shug Jordan Parkway and a Chevy Suburban was traveling north and made a left turn onto North Donahue and they collided, according to Auburn Police Department.

The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries in the accident and was transported by helicopter to East Alabama Medical Center. The driver of the SUV was not injured in the collision.

Fatal motorcycle collision near Mobile

The Press-Register reported a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred Friday night just south of Mobile.

Two men were riding Suzuki GSXR sport bikes when they accidentally collided on Degusa Road at about 11:10 p.m. One man died and the other was seriously injured in the crash.

Motorcycle accidents on rise during summer

An article from the Times-Herald in Arkansas details the dangers for motorcyclists on our nation's roadways, especially during the summer months.

According to the article, motorcycle accidents are more likely during the warmer, sunnier summer months that attract riders to the roads.

In mid-June, there were two such accidents in Forrest City, Arkansas, that caused serious injuries to the motorcycle riders. One was struck by a Dodge pickup truck, and another collided with a vehicle that did not see the motorcycle trying to make a turn.

Authorities are encouraging all motorists to exercise caution when driving, and those driving cars or trucks should keep an eye out for motorcyclists.

Forrest City Police Department detective and motorcycle enthusiast John Riggins said that it is the job of both drivers and riders to be more aware as they travel.
"People need to be more mindful of motorcycles as they drive, and motorcyclists need to be aware of their surroundings. Everyone needs to take a few extra seconds to notice all of the oncoming traffic when they're sitting at an intersection. We're all mindful of cars and trucks that are coming towards us, but we also need to make sure that we look for people on motorcycles as well. All motorcycles are required to have headlights on the front, and those have to be on at all times. Many riders have taken measures to add lights to the front so that drivers can see them coming," said Riggins, who also serves as president of Chapter 25 of Arkansas Bikers Aiming Towards Education (ABATE).

The catch phrase he uses is to "look twice and save a life." This could be applied to all drivers, all the time. Maybe more accidents could be avoided if more drivers followed this rule of thumb.

Warning from CPSC on Kazuma Meerkat 50 ATV

The Kazuma Meerkat 50 Youth All-Terrain Vehicle, which is designed for children from 6 to 11 years old, is not being recalled even though the product has serious safety defects.

This all terrain vehicle lacks front brakes, has no parking brake and can be started in gear, which puts many children in serious danger of injury. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) was unable to recall the product because the agency does not have a third commissioner and therefore lacks quorum.

For the most part, the lack of quorum hasn't affected recalls because up until now companies have been voluntarily cooperating with the Commission when a safety issue arises, says agency spokesman Scott Wolfson. However, when a company fails to cooperate and/or take action to deal with a safety issue, the lack of quorum restricts the CPSC's powers.

The company, Kazuma Pacific Inc., would not recall the item when the CPSC contacted them. The CPSC was forced to issue an very strong warning instead.

According to the company president Jason Tsai, the product has been selling since 2000 and they have received no accident claims. Tsai also states that the company has already been in the process of making a new version of the Meerkat 50 that addresses the CPSC's concerns.

Accidents with uninsured pose growing problem

An article from the Times Daily today addresses the growing problem of uninsured motorists being involved in motor vehicle accidents.

The story cites an example of an Alabama woman and her daughter who were involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist who was driving under the influence with a revoked driver's license. The accident victim fortunately had full insurance coverage that took care of all medical expenses and losses.

A survey from the Insurance Research Council sheds light on the growing national problem of uninsured motorists. The survey shows that 14.6 percent of U.S. households have at least one uninsured vehicle.

Fatal motorcycle accident in North Georgia

A 48-year-old man in North Georgia near Helen died Saturday in a motorcycle accident on Highway 356 near the Habersham County line.

The man apparently lost control of the motorcycle and ran off the road about 12:30 p.m. He passed away while being airlifted to the hospital.

This accident serves as a sad reminder about the risks involved in riding motorcycles on roadways.
