Cribs Recalled Because of Fall Hazard

Munire Furniture Inc., in cooperation with the CPSC, announced a voluntary crib recall of about 24,000 cribs due to a fall hazard.

The recalled cribs were sold under many different brand names including: Brighton/Sussex Cribs, Captiva Cribs, Essex Cribs, Majestic Curved Top and Flat Top Cribs.

The cribs fail to meet the federal safety standards for cribs. The four support brackets on the mattress support spring are too long. The brackets prevent the spring from lowering to the full 26 inch minimum height in its lowest position, allowing children inside to crawl over the railing, posing a fall hazard.

The following cribs with manufacture dates between November 1, 2005 and November 1, 2007 are included in the recall:

Majestic Curved Top cribs - Model No. 9500
Majestic Flat Top cribs - Model No. 9000
Essex cribs - Model No. 7100
Brighton/Sussex cribs - Model No. 9100
Captiva cribs - Model No. 5100

The model number can be found on the bottom inside of the right side rail. The manufacture date is printed on the white label near the model number or on the white label at the bottom of the headboard.

Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled cribs and to contact Munire Furniture to arrange free replacement brackets.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

Biggest Beef Recall in U.S. History

Westland/Hallmark Meat Company recently initiated the largest beef recall in U.S. History, to date.

The recall includes over 143 million pounds of frozen and raw beef produced by a slaughterhouse in Chino, because it may contain foreign materials.

37 million pounds of the recalled beef went to school lunch programs and has most likely been eaten already. Officials have said that danger to consumers is slim to none.

The action came nearly three weeks after the Humane Society of the United States released a video showing workers at the plant using forklifts and water hoses, among other methods, to rouse cattle too weak to walk. In addition to issues of animal cruelty, the video raised questions about whether so-called downer cattle were entering the food chain in violation of federal regulations.

The USDA estimates that about 8.4 million pounds of recalled beef has been recovered. No reports of illness or death of been reported in connection with the recalled beef.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole

New Era Expands Nationwide Recall of Canned Vegetables for Botulism Risk

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced they are expanding a nationwide recall of canned vegetables for a third time due to potential Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum) risk.

C. botulinum produces the toxin that creates botulism which can cause life threatening illness and sometimes death. The affected New Era products included in this recall weigh between 6 and 7 pounds and include various types of asparagus, beans and black eyed peas.

The FDA has not received any reports of illness. However, they are advising consumers to discard any recalled products even if they appear normal due to potential serious health risks.

The potentially contaminated products are marketed under ten different brand names:

1. Classic Sysco
2. Code
3. Frosty Acres Restaurant's Pride Preferred
4. GFS
5. Kitchen Essentials
6. Monarch Heritage
7. Necco
8. New Era
9. Nugget
10. Reliance Sysco

The recalled products are also distributed under private label brands. Products packaged by New Era directly are included in the recall, so consumers must check the lot numbers located on the can bottom to determine if the product is part of the recall.

For a complete list of specific recalled New Era products and lot codes, please visit the FDA's website.

This recall is the most recent to result from an ongoing investigation of New Era Canning's processing plant by the FDA and the Michigan Department of Agriculture. The FDA initiated an inspection of New Era Canning, along with inspections of other low acid canned food manufacturers, following four cases of botulism in consumers who had consumed canned, hot dog chili sauce in the summer of 2007.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Chrissie Cole
